Right now the outdoor wireless dog fence (a type of radio fence) is all the rage. But the wireless dog fence has limitations. The fence line created by the wireless dog fence is necessarily circular (or multi-circular for those willing to get two or more transmitters). And if Rover is obstreperous, stubborn, or addicted to chasing squirrels, then the wireless dog fence is less likely than other radio fences to provide totally reliable deterrence. In such cases, where your yard is not suited to the footprint of a wireless dog fence, or where you need strong correction, greater satisfaction is likely to be had with a standard (wired) radio fence, especially one with a hand-held transmitter that makes training relatively easy, or with a barrier fence supplemented by one or more low-key electric fence wires.

On the other hand, if you yearn for a magical in-house fence that will keep Rover off the sofa, away from the trash can, or off your favorite rug, then another sort of wireless dog fence—the indoor wireless fence—is just the thing. And similarly, if you don’t want a fence at all but would like to train Rover with a hand-held transmitter and receiving collar, or if you just want to stop his excessive barking, then the world of radio-transmitted control signals (see Collars above) has much to offer.
