Innotek Ultrasmart Contain and Train Fence
In our opinion this is the best radio dog fence available anywhere. Here’s why: Besides sharing the general features of our other Innotek fences (see list of general features below the table) and the training features of the Contain and Train Fence (product 20-02), it provides a lightweight contoured receiver built right into the collar that weighs less than 2 ounces, adjusts itself to your dog’s neck, diagnoses whether it is fitting properly, lets you know the battery’s status, and also lets you know through a special diagnostic arrangement if for any reason it is not working properly. These sound like minor matters but they aren’t—because ill-fitting poorly working collars are the number one cause of radio dog fence failure.
Other important advantages:
- The collar is not just water resistant but fully waterproof, so it will survive full immersion.
- The collar batteries are rechargeable, so there’s no need to replace batteries. The battery, a long-lasting lithium-ion type, comes with its own recharging unit and can be recharged in an hour or two.
- The main transmitter also has a superior battery system that includes a round-the-clock battery backup in the event of a power failure.
The ultrasmart receiving collar is compatible with the two other Innotek systems sold here (20-01 and 20-02). In fact, you can upgrade either of these systems to the new collar technology by purchasing an ultrasmart collar (20-03A) and a collar recharger (product 20-03B).
The receiving collar is also compatible with the Innotek Zone indoor systems that keep Rover off the couch, out of the trash, away from kitty litter, etc. So if you get an appropriate number of Zone discs whose transmitting range can be set at anywhere from 1 to 12 feet (product 20-12A) you will be able to control unwanted behavior inside as well as outside the house.
The system is suited to a wide range of dogs weighing 12 to 220 pounds. The ultrasmart kit comes with 500 feet of wire and 50 boundary flags, enough to enclose about a third of an acre. However, by purchasing more boundary wire and flags (product 20-06) you can extend the fence in 500-foot increments up to a maximum length of 4,500 feet, enough to enclose up to 25 acres (as compared to the maximum recommended capacity of 2,000 feet or roughly 5 acres for the other kits). The system also comes with 100 feet of pre-twisted wire for reaching gardens, pools, or other areas that you wish to protect inside Rover’s play area. The twisted wires send no control signal, so you can go from the boundary wire to an internal garden or pool with these twisted wires and can then protect this internal area by extending a single (untwisted) wire around it.
The system also includes an external lightning protection module. Thus, besides protecting your home from lightning surges coming through the boundary wire, the ultrasmart system also protects the transmitter by stopping the surge at the external module. This module comes with a lifetime warranty and will be replaced free for the life of the system.
Besides all these special features, the fence also comes with a hand-held transmitter. The commands issued by this hand-held transmitter resemble those issued by the fence’s main transmitter. However, the hand-held transmitter is independent of the main transmitter, can be used outside the play area established by the boundary wire, and will activate the receiving collar at distances of up to 150 yards. Command options include a warning tone and up to 7 levels of harmless but effective correction. The remote transmitter is waterproof and small enough to fit inside your pocket, so you can always have it with you. This ultrasmart contain and train system can be used to contain and train multiple dogs at the same time, and its hand-held training transmitter can provide specific independent correction for different dogs. It is, in brief, the most advanced and effective contain and train system on the planet.
The ultrasmart contain and train kit (product 20-03) contains the following items:

General features of the ultrasmart contain and train fence:
- Above-Ground Installation: You do not need to bury your boundary wire. You can do so; but you can also get some staples (product 20-07), run the wire above ground, and staple it down every 5 feet or so. This saves a lot of labor and makes it easy to locate any breaks that may occur.
- Adjustable Correction Zone: You can adjust the system so that your dog’s receiving collar picks up the boundary wire’s signal anywhere from a few feet to 20 feet in from the wire.
- Automatic Safety Shutoff: After a reasonable but short period of corrective stimulus the system shuts down to keep from overexposing Rover to corrective commands. The system then reactivates itself automatically.
- Anti-Drain Feature: This prevents Rover from lingering for a prolonged time in the warning zone, a behavior that runs down the receiving collar’s battery.
- Internal Area Protection: When two boundary wires are twisted together they are silent (send no signal). So you can protect internal areas (gardens, pools, etc.) by taking two strands of the main boundary wire, twisting them together to reach the garden or pool to be protected, and going around that garden or pool with a single wire.
- Long and Short Hair Correction: The receiving collar comes with a set of short prongs for correcting short-haired dogs and a set of longer prongs for correcting long-haired dogs.
- Lightning Protection: All these systems come with protection against lightning-induced surges in the boundary wire, which protects your home from exposure to such surges.
- Line Break Indicator: This alerts you to the fact that a break has occurred in the boundary wire but does not tell where the break is (for which you need a line break detector; see Accessories).
- Multiple Collars: You can use any one of these systems to contain as many dogs as you like simply by providing one receiving collar for each dog. These additional collars must be purchased separately.
- No Cross Signals: Rover’s receiving collar will respond only to the pure digital signals emitted by the fence’s transmitter and will not respond to errant radio signals put out by other radio sources (computer systems, cell phones, etc).
- Instructions and DVD: Each fence comes with a complete set of installation instructions, a basic training manual, and a DVD demonstrating training procedures.
