Innotek Contain and Train Radio Dog Fence
This Innotek product has a stellar advantage over most other radio fences. Besides the radio fence itself you get a hand-held transmitter that helps you mightily in training Rover to come when called, stay off the couch, not chase squirrels, etc. The commands issued when you press a button are similar to those issued by the fence. However, the training system is independent of the main transmitter, can be used outside the play area established by the boundary wire, and will cause the receiving collar to issue commands when it is up to 150 yards away from the hand-held transmitter. Command options include a good dog tone, a bad dog tone, and 4 levels of harmless but effective correction.
Using the system for both containment (in the play area) and for training (in any area) works very well, extends your effective training reach beyond shouts and whistles, and helps your dog to understand that these harmless but effective commands, whether coming from the boundary wire or from yourself, are part of a general training system that should be respected. Like the basic fence kit, this contain and train kit comes with 500 feet of wire and 50 boundary flags, enough to enclose about a third of an acre; and by purchasing more boundary wire and flags (product 20-06) you can extend the fence in 500-foot increments up to a maximum length of 2,000 feet, enough to enclose up to 5 acres.
The system operates in three modes: Contain only, train only, and contain and train. The main transmitter sends out the same kinds of progressively increasing signals as the basic and ultrasmart fences (products 20-10 and 20-03). However, the collar and main transmitter are not identical to those of the basic fence, making this system suitable for handling dogs in the 15 to 220 pound weight range.
The receiving collar’s 3-volt battery will need periodic replacement, but replacements are easily obtained locally. Like the basic fence’s collar, the contain and train fence’s receiving collar is water resistant rather than fully waterproof; you should expect it to fend off rain and snow (but not dog baths and swimming pools).
The contain and train kit (product 20-02, model SD-3000) includes the following items:
- One standard wall-mounted transmitter
- One water-resistant receiving collar with a replaceable 3-volt battery
- One hand-held transmitter
- 500 feet of long-lasting heavy-duty underground wire
- 50 boundary flags
- 2 waterproof boundary wire splices
- Two sets of collar prongs, one for short-haired dogs and one for long-haired dogs

General features of the contain and train fence:
- Above-Ground Installation: You do not need to bury your boundary wire. You can do so; but you can also get some staples (product 20-07), run the wire above ground, and staple it down every 5 feet or so. This saves a lot of labor and makes it easy to locate any breaks that may occur.
- Adjustable Correction Zone: You can adjust the system so that your dog’s receiving collar picks up the boundary wire’s signal anywhere from a few feet to 20 feet in from the wire.
- Automatic Safety Shutoff: After a reasonable but short period of corrective stimulus the system shuts down to keep from overexposing Rover to corrective commands. The system then reactivates itself automatically.
- Anti-Drain Feature: This prevents Rover from lingering for a prolonged time in the warning zone, a behavior that runs down the receiving collar’s battery.
- Internal Area Protection: When two boundary wires are twisted together they are silent (send no signal). So you can protect internal areas (gardens, pools, etc.) by taking two strands of the main boundary wire, twisting them together to reach the garden or pool to be protected, and going around that garden or pool with a single wire.
- Long and Short Hair Correction: The receiving collar comes with a set of short prongs for correcting short-haired dogs and a set of longer prongs for correcting long-haired dogs.
- Lightning Protection: All these systems come with protection against lightning-induced surges in the boundary wire, which protects your home from exposure to such surges.
- Line Break Indicator: This alerts you to the fact that a break has occurred in the boundary wire but does not tell where the break is (for which you need a line break detector; see Accessories).
- Multiple Collars: You can use any one of these systems to contain as many dogs as you like simply by providing one receiving collar for each dog. These additional collars must be purchased separately.
- No Cross Signals: Rover’s receiving collar will respond only to the pure digital signals emitted by the fence’s transmitter and will not respond to errant radio signals put out by other radio sources (computer systems, cell phones, etc).
- Instructions and DVD: Each fence comes with a complete set of installation instructions, a basic training manual, and a DVD demonstrating training procedures.
