Collar

Training Collar

The radio-operated training collar is the best invention since the leash for training dogs. Not only will it mightily assist your training efforts, but it will keep you from having to shout or run after your dog when it does something wrong and will issue a harmless but effective correction for the misdeed on the spot.

The system offered here (Innotek’s FS-15) has a range of 150 yards. A receiver in the collar responds to a small battery-operated transmitter that fits easily into the palm of your hand. The water-resistant receiver, powered by a 6-volt camera battery included with the system, can be adjusted to issue a warning tone or any of 7 levels of correction.

The transmitter, powered by a 12-volt alkaline battery (also included), comes with a switch that allows you to raise the degree of correction by 2 levels in case of need. Designed for dogs weighing anywhere from 20 to 200 pounds, the system comes with a test light, extra probes for long-haired dogs, a probe wrench, a free training DVD, and a limited lifetime warranty.

Anti-bark Collars

Anti-bark Collars

Anti-bark collar with shock correction: This smart collar (left above and 20-18 below, Innotek model BC-50B) not only controls Rover’s barking but trains him to pipe down in the future. Unlike other no-bark collars, it lowers the correction level as your dog learns not to bark. The goal: No more barking and no more collar.

How it works: The collar has seven correction levels and tunes itself to your dog’s bark, so it cannot be set off by other sounds—including the barks of other dogs. When Rover barks it provides a negative correction, and it then increases the correction level at brief intervals until the barking stops. If the barking stops for 5 minutes it will set the next stimulation level back two notches, reinforcing your dog’s training. Typically, Rover will quickly associate barking with the correction and will stop barking on his own after a few corrections.

Dog

You should not leave the collar on your dog for more than 12 consecutive hours (this is contrary to effective training). Also, you should remove the collar when you play with him—because play may cause your dog to bark, and that could lead him to associate play with negative correction.

This product is lightweight (the receiver weighs only 2.5 ounces), is designed for dogs weighing 20 to 200 pounds, and can be adjusted in length from 11 to 24 inches. The collar sets itself automatically with a patented Auto Set technology and has no awkward dials or switches. It is water resistant (will take limited exposure to rain or snow but not immersion) and comes with a 6-volt battery of a sort readily available in local stores. Other accessories included with the collar: two sets of stimulation probes (one for short-haired dogs and one for long-haired dogs), two vibration probes, and an owner’s manual.

Anti-bark collar with spray control: (See right photo above and 20-19 below, Innotek model PBC00-11282.) This is the collar for those averse to giving Rover even a mild and harmless electric shock. Instead of an electric shock, this device uses a burst of all-natural citrus spray that is both safe and effective. Dogs respond because of their well-developed sense of smell, which makes the spray a potent tool for deterring excess barking. Indeed, a study published by the Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association found that citronella-based bark control collars such as this one were more effective at reducing barking than electrical stimulation collars.

The collar is appropriate for dogs weighing over 8 pounds and will be set off only by the bark of the dog wearing it, not by other dogs’ barks or other sounds. When full, the collar’s sprayer holds enough liquid for up to 80 sprays. To operate the unit, simply place the battery in the collar, attach the collar to your dog’s neck, and use the on/off switch to turn the system on. The waterproof unit comes with indicators that tell when either the battery or the liquid spray is low, a long-life 6-volt battery readily replaceable in local stores, a 10-year limited warranty, and an owner’s manual.
