Electric Dog Fences > Products > Posts
Introduction
All the metal posts offered elsewhere on this site to make barrier fences can also be used with insulators 07-104 or 07-104A to make sturdy electric fences. Wood posts can be used this way too, with some of the other insulators listed. And of course insulators and wires can be placed on existing fences, whether those fences are made of wood, metal, or other materials, in a way that greatly boosts their dog-repelling powers.
When a choice exists, our favorite electric fence post is the 3/8-inch fiberglass post. This post, which comes in lengths ranging from 3 to 6 feet, is affordable, durable, versatile, and easy as pie to install. Use the shorter posts to build low electric fences to contain little dogs and keep them out of gardens; or use taller fiberglass posts to contain all but the very few dogs that can sail over 5-foot fences.
These posts can also be used in surprising ways to strengthen existing fencing. Awhile ago a woman called us because her large and athletic dogs were jumping over a 6-foot cattle fence. All that was needed to fix this problem was two runs of fiberglass posts with electrified fence wires, one about three feet in from the main fence and the other roughly six feet in. This setup creates a “shock zone” that dogs, no matter how stubborn, generally stay away from; and since they rarely get near the tall outer fence, it keeps them inside the yard.
3/8-inch Fiberglass Posts
We prefer the 3/8-inch diameter posts because they are so affordable and easy to install. They are flexible, which makes them bend at corners, ends, and gates; so one may opt to install steel or wood posts at these points; or else one may simply insert any bending fiberglass posts into the ground at an angle that counteracts the bend.
These posts are just the right size for a little insulator (product 07-06E) that clips onto them and can easily be slid up or down the post to the precise height where one wishes to mount the wire. All of the posts we offer have been treated to make them proof against fiberglass splinters, though you can still get splinters from touching a post at its cut end. Most of the posts we offer can be made very unobtrusive—not just because they are thin but because most lengths are available in hunter green. Regardless of your specific application, plan on inserting these posts into the ground about a foot, which in virtually all soils is enough to anchor them against anything but a direct upward pull.
Galvanized (Hot-dipped) Studded Steel T-posts
Our hot-dipped galvanized steel T-posts are a good choice for permanent fence construction. These posts, all manufactured according to ASTM A702-89 specificiations, come with a heavy-duty spade to anchor them in the ground.
