Battery-powered Fence Chargers
We offer four low-impedance battery-powered chargers suited to electric dog fences. Each has an all-weather case and comes with installation instructions, a flashing light indicating that the unit is working properly, and a one-year manufactur’s warranty covering defects and lightning damage (the Fi-Shock SS-LG has a 2-year warranty).
The SS-LG, equivalent to the 0.05 joule Dare Enforcer 20, is powered by 2 flashlight batteries (D cells) and is suited to dealing with small and docile dogs. You need a fence tester (product 04-02) to tell when the D cells are failing, but if you start with fresh alkaline D cells you can expect them to last 2 months.
The Zareba Yellow Jacket (0.25 joules) and Dare DS 140 (0.35 joules) can both be powered by 4 D cells (flashlight batteries), a six-volt battery, or a 12-volt battery. If you use the D cells you can expect them to last about a month; but again, you will need a tester (product 04-02) to tell exactly when they need replacing.
The Yellow Jacket and DS 140 are both made to clamp directly onto a ground rod, which makes them very convenient to use with portable electric fences. The DS 140 also adjusts well to power drains caused by weed contact, and so is well-suited to use with low electric fence wires.
The most powerful battery-powered charger listed below, the 0.75 joule Dare Sentry 300, takes a 6-volt or 12-volt battery. The DS 300 adjusts well to power drains and is suited to dealing with large and stubborn dogs.
Those planning to use battery-powered chargers in cold conditions should note that D cells do not work at freezing temperatures and that gel-type batteries such as those used in solar-powered chargers are apt to be far more effective and trouble-free than wet cells in cold times.
