AC-powered Fence Chargers
Because dog size and motivation vary greatly, we offer a wide range of low impedance AC-powered chargers to deal with everything from peaceful little Lhasa Apsos to berserk Great Danes. The diminutive DE 20 with 0.05 joules of power is safe for Chihuahuas, cats, kittens, and sparrows. The DE 60, with twice the power (0.1 joules) is a good choice for dealing with reasonably tractable 10 to 25 pound dogs. The DE 80 (0.2 joules) and the DE-120 (0.3 joules) handle dogs weighing 25 pounds and up. However, for large and determined dogs that will not respond to anything but a fair-sized jolt, the Fi-Shock SS-V (0.5 joules) or the DE 300 (0.75 joules) is a better choice. Each of the chargers comes with a weather-resistant case and installation instructions. The DE 20, DE 60, DE 80, and DE-120 come with a 30-day manufacturer's warranty; the DE 300 comes with a 1-year manufacturer's warranty; and the SS-5 comes with a 2-year manufacturer's warranty.
All of the Dare chargers adjust well to power drains caused by weeds touching the fence, increasing their output significantly to compensate for the power loss. They are therefore well-suited to working with low fence wires (placed low to prevent digging or crawling under the fence). Even so, it is a good idea to put down a layer of black polyfilm under the fence and to cover the film with an inch or so of pine bark mulch in order to discourage grass and weeds from growing up and contacting the low wire.
Another important point about AC chargers: They should be plugged into a nearby AC outlet and their output (very much safer than house current) should be conducted out to the fence with special undergate and hookup wire (products 02-28 and 02-29) that can be connected to the charged wire or wires with a split-bolt clamp (product 08-33).
