Planning a Basic Dog Fence
Fence Rolls and Anti-Digging Barriers
The fencing for our basic dog fences is made of welded steel wire with a long-lasting green pvc coating. The mesh openings are rectangular, with the shorter (2, 3, and 4-foot) rolls having rectangular 3 x 2-inch openings and the tallest (6-foot) rolls having 2 x 4-inch openings. The 2, 3, and 4-foot rolls are made of 15-gauge steel wire, while the heavier 6-foot rolls are constructed of 13-gauge steel wire. Many miniature and short dogs can be contained in a 2-foot fence, and most dogs need no more than a 4-foot fence. However, certain athletic breeds (including many hunting dogs and shepherds) require a 6-foot fence.
If your dog likes to dig, consider getting an anti-digging barrier (product 14-35GH). This consists of a roll of steel chicken wire coated with green pvc that has a 1-inch mesh. The barrier has straight horizontal wires at the top and bottom, so there are no loose ends. This barrier should be laid down along the inside of the fence and should be anchored to the soil with hefty 1-foot kinked galvanized ground stakes (product 18-01A). We recommend using one ground stake for every 1.5 to 3 feet of barrier, depending on how much your dog likes to dig.
